Beyond the traditions that underlay these
melodies, it is the most accomplished technique,
which ends up in this encounter of three musicians
whose routes are marked with endearments -
endearment for their instruments in the first
place.
The balaban, specific to Azerbaijan, was
handed over from the father to the son. Nadir
made it to rise up from the background of
ancestral orchestrations to a musical line
sometime in soloist mode with a powerful and
balanced sensitivity, always heart-rending.
Balaban took Nadir to France, Israel, Turkey
and Germany.
Thirty years ago, the oud was hardly known
from Yussef, apart from the virtuoso harmonies
he could hear, during Soviet times, over the
Arabic or Turkish radios. At that time, he
could not imagine that, thanks to a gift of
this instrument he received from his music
teacher, he would be able, after few decades
of personal research, to attain the mastery
which today dresses his emotions, in between
nostalgia and smile, and took him through
Turkey, Netherlands and Belarus where he gave
concerts.
When playing his percussions instruments
Ramin may be alternatively concentrated and
mischievous. A personal style which is appreciated
from Baku to London. His passion for jazz
led him to tinge the past and its musical
traditions, in his previous record “Mugham-
Meghan” with the colors of Baku nights now
freed from the past constraints.
But the real “coup de coeur” burst between
the three partners when, three years ago,
Rain, saxophonist, music producer and Ramin’s
brother completed the alchemy of this triangular
relation. Time passing, with their respective
contributions they compose a balanced group
whose strong identity is colored with nuances
inherited from the history of the Caspian
Sea. They have learnt together to revisit
traditional music as it has been influenced
by Iran, Turkey and the Arab world, so far
and so close at the same time. They gave to
their music this inimitable flavor, which
we find only in Baku.
